MyEtherWallet & Ledger Wallet: How to Use Them Together

I have talked about MyEtherwallet (MEW) before and when you combine the security of a hardware wallet with MEW, you enhance the security of your coins to a great extent.

You can always use Ledger wallet with MEW and in this tutorial, I’m sharing everything you need to know to use MEW and Ledger wallet together.

Sounds good?

Let’s move ahead.

How to enable Browser support in Ledger Nano X or S for MyEtherWallet?

  • Head over to MyEtherewallet Homepage & Click on Access my wallets
  • Select Hardware from the option and then select Ledger

  • Before you click on “Connect to Ledger Nano” you need to enable the browser support from the device.
  • To make it easier for you to understand, I have made this quick video that explains how to enable browser support in Ledger Nano wallet. The same setting applies for Ledger Nano S, Ledger X or any other version.

  • That’s it, once you have enabled it, now you need to click on “Connect to Ledger Nano S” at MyEtherwallet

Connect to Ledger Nano S

  • Aslo enable Contract data

You would get the option like this to connect to your Ethereum wallet on Ledger Nano S

From here, you can start sending/receiving Ethereum using MyEtherwallet.

Easy is int it? Well, I was wondering from which settings I need to enable browser support. That was it!

How To Send ERC20 Tokens To A Ledger Nano S (Using MyEtherWallet)

Transfer ERC20 Tokens To A Ledger Nano S

Note: For this tutorial, I am assuming you have your ERC20 tokens like BAT on an exchange which you want to transfer to a Ledger Nano device.

And for making this transfer, you will be required to know the ETH address of your Ledger Wallet Ethereum so that you can transfer your ERC20 tokens on it.

For doing this, follow the steps given below to get your Ledger Wallet Ethereum address.

Step #1. Go to www.myetherwallet.com and click on

  • Click on Access my wallets
  • Select Hardware from the option and then select Ledger

Step #2. Select ‘Ledger Wallet’ option as shown in the image above. You should be able to see this:

Send ERC20 Tokens On A Ledger Nano S

Step #3. Now, connect your Ledger Nano S device to your system and put your PIN number to activate it.

Ledger Nano S

Step #4. Then go to your Ledger Wallet Ethereum app in the Ledger Nano S and open it. Note: Once you have opened the Ethereum app in your Ledger Nano S device, make sure your browser support is enabled. If not, go to Settings -> Browser Support, and set it to “Yes”.

Step #5. After making sure of it, keep the Ethereum app open in your Ledger Nano S device and click on ‘Connect to Ledger Wallet’ option as shown in Step #2.

Step #6. After clicking the ‘Connect to Ledger Wallet’ option, you will see a screen where you need to click on ‘Unlock your wallet’ option at the bottom right as shown in the below image.

Connect to Ledger Wallet

Step #7. Once you have clicked ‘Unlock your wallet’ you will be taken into the wallet interface which will look like this:

Unlock your wallet

Here, you will be able to see the ETH address of your Ledger wallet where you will be required to transfer your ERC20 tokens.

Note, this wallet is the Ledger wallet that you are accessing via MyEtherWallet.

Step #8. Click on ‘Display address on Ledger’ option and verify if the address shown on the screen is same as the address displayed on your Ledger device. This extra step is for avoiding ‘man-in-the-middle’ attack.

Step #9. Having verified this, you can now copy this address shown on the screen on MEW interface.

Send Ether and Tokens from MyEtherWallet

Step #10. Now put this address as your withdrawal address while withdrawing ERC20 tokens from a wallet or exchange.

Step #11. Finally, when you have sent your ERC20 token out from the exchange wallet, you can check from the below shown ‘Tokens (Ethplorer.io)’ option if you have received your tokens or not.

ERC20 token to Ledger wallet

So that covers all you need to know and understand to transfer ERC20 tokens to Ledger Nano S using MEW.

How to Send ERC20 Tokens From A Ledger Nano S (Using MyEtherWallet)

Note: I am assuming that you have your ERC20 tokens stored on a Ledger Nano S for this tutorial.

Step #1. Simply head over to MyEtherwallet dashboard as shown below.

Step #2. Select ‘Ledger Wallet’ option as shown in the image above. You should be able to see this:

Send Ether and Tokens

Step #3. Now connect your Ledger Nano S device to your system and put your PIN number to activate it. Then go to your Ledger Wallet Ethereum app in the Ledger Nano S and open it.

Step #4. Once you have opened the Ethereum app in your Ledger Nano S device, make sure your browser support is enabled. If not, go to Settings -> Browser Support, and set it to “Yes”.

Step #5. After making sure of it, keep the Ethereum app open in your Ledger Nano S device and click on ‘Connect to Ledger Wallet’ option as shown in Step #2.

Step #6. After clicking ‘Connect to Ledger Wallet’ option you will see a screen where you need to click on ‘Unlock your wallet’ option at the bottom right as shown in the below image.

Step #7. Once you have clicked ‘Unlock your wallet’ you will be taken into the wallet interface which will look like this:

Unlock your wallet MyEtherWallet

Remember, this wallet is the Ledger wallet that you are accessing via MyEtherWallet.

Step #8. Now the main difference starts as transferring ETH is simple and straightforward but for accessing tokens you need explore the token balances.

Step #9. On the same screen, as shown in step #7, you will see the ‘Token Balances’ section. Under this, click on ‘Show All Tokens’ and search for your token which you want to transfer out of the Ledger Nano S.

Transfer out of Ledger Nano S

Step #10. When you click on ‘Show All Tokens’ you will see this kind of a list:

Show All Tokens

From this list, click on ‘Click to load’ in front of your token. In this example, I had TRX balance so I clicked on ‘Click to load’ in front of it. Remember, you should have positive balance tor transfer ERC20. Also, just in case if you are not able to find your ERC20 token, you might need to perform a couple of steps to add a custom ERC20 in MyEtherWallet.

Step #11. I had TRX balance already in Ledger Nano S, so you will be able to see TRX balance as shown below through MEW interface:

TRX-Balance

Step #12. To transfer the TRX ERC20 token from Ledger Nano S, select the options as shown below and put the correct recipient address in the ‘To Address’ field.

Note: when you enter the ‘Amount to Send’ the ‘Gas Limit’ field will be auto-populated, so don’t change that. Also, make sure that you have some Ether on this address on which you have your ERC20 to be used as ‘Gas’ otherwise your transaction will not be completed.

Sending TRX Out from Ledger Nano S

Step #13. Once you have selected all these fields, now you are all set to hit ‘Generate Transaction’ as shown in the above image. Note: Please make sure that your contract data is enabled in the Ledger Nano S app before hitting ‘Generate Transaction’. If not, go to Settings -> Contract data on your Ledger Nano S and set it to “Yes.”

Step # 14. Confirm your transaction on Ledger Nano S device interface.

Step #15. After confirming and generating the transaction, it will prompt and show you the ‘Send Transaction’ option and you need to hit that finally. (If at all you are asked for confirmation on the Ledger Nano S device again, please confirm the same.)

Send Transaction Option

Step #16. After confirming ‘Send Transaction’, you can check your transaction status on (https://etherscan.io) as shown in the right of the interface:

Transaction status

So that covers all you need to know and understand to transfer ERC20 tokens from Ledger Nano S using MEW.

We also have a few more video guides for Ledger Nano S. If you have not started using this hardware wallet & use an exchange to keep ETH or BTC, you are making a big mistake.

You should order Ledger Nano for holding your cryptocurrencies.

It supports many other altcoins like BNB, Dash, and Ripple to name a few.

Here are the videos that would help you get started with Ledger Nano S.

We have more tutorials & guides coming up. If you have not yet subscribed to CoinSutra, you should do that right away.

    Hi Harsh,

Where can one buy Ledger Nano S in India?

I cant find it on Amazon

  2. Raja

    Hello Harsh,
Thanks for the great blog. It really helped. I just have few questions.

    By the step:
Please select the address you would like to interact with.

What do i need to do there? There are so many addresses but i cant find myetherwallet address that i use normally.

Are all those addresses installed on my Ledger nano s and available for me?

Normally you have to create a new wallet on myetherwallet and insert a private key or keystore fill. Where do i do that when? I want to create a new wallet with ledger nano s and where do i put in my private key?

It would be really nice of you if you can help me out with this. No one on the facebook, youtube or google explaine this important step.

    Thanks a lot in advance

      @Raja
Will do another post explaining the same.

      1. RAJA

That will be great. I hope you will it soon. No one expanded this in detail. It would help a lot of people. I will wait to put my coins on my nano s till after your video. Thanks in advance my friend

From https://www.myetherwallet.com Cannot connect to Ledger Wallet using Safari Browser.
The window does not want to pop out to choose which ETH address I want to correspond.

When I go to Chrome all is good but Safari does not want to connect?

Do you have any ideas why?

    Thank you!

    1. Sudhir Khatwani

nope, Never used it with Safari. Maybe others be able to provide you some food for thought.

tried to send some eth to my ledger through myetherwallet but got tripped on what to set as the gas limit. what would you suggest?

    1. Robert

I am having the same issue. I am doing some testings using ledger with MEW. So I was able to send ETH with no problems, but then when trying to send tokens with different GAS limit values (example 53033) and I always get a “insufficient funds for gas * price + value” error.

      1. Robert

Another weird error I am getting is: “Insufficient funds. The account you tried to send transaction from does not have enough funds. Required 1008000000000000 and got: 0” But this is really weird, I am trying to send 10 tokens out of a total balance of 700, and also trying with different gas limit values but same results.

  5. jays

does the nano s let you store eth based coins like sys , sub , ven , wabi ? if so jow do instore them ? all in the ethereum column on the lesger ??

    1. jays

and what address wouls i be sensing them to my eth address ?? very confused as i did not buy this for just btc and eth

      1. Sudhir Khatwani

Can you be a bit clear in English? Can’t understand..
If you asking you to send Ethereum tokens to ledger Nano S then yes you can do so and view it with MyEtherWallet.

  6. Michael

I am confused on the ERC20 and clicked this link as it was referenced, but there is nothing on this here. How do you get, transfer and see ERC20 and do they get automatically stored with ETC? Does it automatically separate it in one address? Do you need a different address? Also, if you need the myetherwallet to do it and you can only see them through that, what happens if myetherwallet goes down?? You won’t have access to your ERC20 tokens?? Please clarify and explain. There have been many “ERC tokens” I would like to get but am ignorant on how to put them in my ledger wallet. Please educate me. Thank you in advance, your videos are enlightening.
